Location

Canberra is a vibrant university city with a huge student population, due to the numerous universities and technical colleges located there. As a result, the city has much to offer students, from lively pub and café cultures, live music venues, cheap eats, and a flourishing local arts community. Local and national film festivals rub shoulders with art, writing, theatre and dance, and many events are free or discounted for students.

With a population of 320,000, Canberra is medium-sized by Australian standards. It offers the benefits of city living without the traffic, pollution, and financial hassles of bigger cities. Canberra lends itself to an outdoorsy lifestyle, with an abundance of parks, lakes, bush land reserves, and bike paths throughout the city and suburbs and numerous national parks not far away.

Canberra is an ideal base to explore Australia. The South Coast is only 1.5 hours drive from Canberra where you will find magnificent beaches, lakes, and rivers. The area encompasses a range of National Parks and State Forests where there is great camping and hiking away from the crowds. The clubs and restaurants of Melbourne, and Sydney’s city beaches and harbor views are also easily accessible from Canberra, thanks to frequent bus services between the three cities. The Australian Alps or Snowy Mountains are just two hours away. The area is best known for skiing but in summer you can go white water rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, or walk to the top of Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko.

Extracurricular Activities

All students are members of the University of Canberra Union, which organizes social, cultural, faculty, hobby, and sporting activities throughout the year. Entertainment includes comedy performances, jazz and rock 'n' roll bands, films, art exhibits, cafés, and market days.

There is an abundance of clubs that you may join such as accounting, athletics, bible reading, dance, design, theatre, hockey, media, movies, netball, outdoors, scuba, skiing, swimming soccer, volleyball, rowing, surfing, and waterpolo.

Sport, both social and competitive, is a major part of life in Canberra. The campus is scattered with a variety of playfields and has an indoor gym and fitness center. You can join any UC sporting team and travel interstate with the team to participate in National University games. UC is near the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the training facility for Australia 's elite and Olympic athletes. You can use the world class facilities at the AIS such as synthetic athletic track, indoor swimming center, gymnastics hall, soccer and hockey fields, outdoor tennis courts, and sports training facility.

Advice From The Coordinator:
Visit the performing arts complex in the city center which hosts an excellent variety of local, national and international bands and artists. Also, past students have recommended buying a bicycle to ride around campus and the city. Over 100 miles of cycle paths criss-cross the city and suburbs.
A word from our alumni
"The University of Canberra was a reasonable size were you saw the same person twice. I made friends the same night I arrived, and we continue to keep in contact. I would be surprised if any other university could top the friendly, outgoing people I met in Canberra. They have made the most incredible impact in my life."
P. Marrangoni
