Macquarie University - Semester or Year Abroad

Overview

Location

Macquarie University is located in the Sydney suburb of North Ryde. The campus is set on 135 acres of parkland amongst a major technology precinct, a residential area and the Lane Cove National Park. The beautiful surrounds allow our students to experience a university life that is in a safe and picturesque environment.

Extracurricular Activities

Macquarie Abroad, along with other providers and campus clubs, will offer several weekend trips during each semester taking in the breathtaking wonder of the Australian coastline, landscape, and mountains. Experienced providers will take you away from it all, and then bring you back safely. Regular social events are also offered including Sydney Harbor cruises, sporting matches, movie nights, and parties. Bring your camera!

There's something for everyone in Sydney, whether it be hitting the suburban beaches; the many water activities on the harbor, rivers, and waterways; a visit to the Opera House; a stroll along the Rocks; or a trip to the Blue Mountains, the ski fields, or the magnificent coastal areas north and south of the city. There is ample opportunity to explore historical and cultural sites and attend cultural and sporting events. A visit to the Olympic Stadium is a must. Weekend trips to Canberra, Melbourne, or Brisbane are also recommended in order to sample the diversity of Australia.

Macquarie University offers students the opportunity to volunteer while they are studying in Australia. As an international student, volunteers have the opportunity to meet and working alongside "real" Australians. Students can volunteer every week or can choose to volunteer for special events during the semester.

Academic Highlights

Students can enroll in classes acrosss a variety of disciplines. Research placements in Sydney, Australia, are also available. The placements enable applicants to participate in a laboratory or research center based placement to undertake a project of between three and nine months in their academic disciplines.

  • Since 1998, Macquarie has won 11 Competitive Centres of Excellence in new science-based high technology areas.
  • Macquarie is the home of Australia ’s first NASA affiliated Centre for Astrobiology and one of four worldwide.
  • Macquarie University is the home of the Macquarie Dictionary, Australia ’s national dictionary.
  • Macquarie has won more best practice rankings for technology-aided teaching than any other institution, with award winning e-learning projects and a high ranking in Preparing Students for an E-World survey.
  • 65 percent of staff hold doctoral qualifications, higher than the national average.
  • Macquarie biologist, Professor Richard Frankham, has been named one of the world’s best scientists of the 21st century.
  • The Macquarie Graduate School of Management’s (MGSM) MBA Program has been ranked number one in Australia and Asia and 42nd in the world. MGSM was also rated first in the world in the areas of student quality and diversity of recruiters and second in the areas of personal development and educational experience by Economist Intelligence Unit's publication on global full-time MBA rankings.
  • The Master of Applied Finance program is the biggest in the world by a factor of four and was described as “exemplary” by the Asian Development Bank.
National Destination Surveys show excellent results for Macquarie University in respect of obtaining employment, starting salaries, and positive graduate outcomes. Students overwhelmingly agree that they acquire the key skills to maximize their employment prospects.

Study Abroad students can actively participate in Macquarie University’s Warawara Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders program classes, which explore the deeper understanding of Aboriginal history and culture.

Macquarie is one of only two universities in Australia that allows students to not only study abroad, but also receive an official award during your semester or year of study. In one semester you can receive a Certificate of Study Abroad in your subject area.

University Services

The Macquarie Abroad at Macquarie University coordinates all study abroad students, from application through to arrival, accommodation, orientation and enrollment. Ongoing pastoral care is also provided, including referral to counseling and health services, as well as organizing weekend trips and other social events.

The Dean of Students provides academic and procedural advice to students and acts as a liaison between students and the University.

The University's library provides seating for 1,850 readers, with a collection of over one million books and periodicals. It is open for 82 hours per week during the semester, with shorter hours outside of the semester. It has two CD-ROM networks, and there are 40 online catalogue terminals.

The Office of Computing Services runs several major computers, which are connected to the University Backbone Network, which is connected to the Australian Academic and Research Network. There are many terminals available for students all around the university. Students are able to set up their own Macquarie email accounts.

Housing

Pre-arranged accommodation is provided in self-catering shared apartments, which are generally walking distance from the campus.

Orientation

Getting to know Australia, Sydney, and Macquarie University upon arrival is a challenge in itself. The Macquarie Abroad team conducts an orientation to give you a taste of what to expect and how to get the most out of your experience.

The orientation is held the week prior to the commencement of classes and covers issues including settling in to Sydney, culture shock, accommodation, health insurance, student clubs and societies, email access, study skills, weekend trips, and social events. We’ll also introduce you to some of the local wildlife and keep you on your toes with some uniquely Australian fun and games!

Macquarie Abroad Advisors are dedicated to ensuring all study abroad students needs are met, from application through to returning home and grade transcripts. The Macquarie Abroad Advisors are the key liaison people between students, Macquarie University , home university, and AustraLearn.

Special Programs/Excursions

Eligible students can undertake a part-time internship placement to complement their study abroad program at Macquarie University and enhance their resumes with international work experience.

Study Placements in Sydney, Australia which enable applicants to participate in a laboratory or research center based placement to undertake a project of between 3 and 9 months in their academic disciplines.

Study Abroad Certificates where students have the opportunity to complete an official award of the University while participating in the Study Abroad Program.

Fee Includes

Program fees are in U.S. dollars. Program Fees include tuition for 3 to 4 subjects, university administrative fees, membership in the student union (where applicable), overseas health coverage, ISIC Premium (International Student Identity Card), 25% Lonely Planet Book discount, also included is our renowned 4-day Program Introduction in Tropical Cairns, Australia. Fees include all pre-trip services such as: orientation materials, visa-processing service (excluding the visa fee), housing placements, personal advising, subject selections, liaise with your home university, credit transfer assistance, and financial aid services. As a study abroad student, you will be required to enroll as a full time student. Your semester is equivalent to 12-16 U.S. credits. Additional tuition and/or fees may apply in some subject areas not limited to the following: science, engineering, fine arts, and journalism. Students who undertake subjects where the university requires additional fees will be billed by the host university. Several universities have included the Sports and Rec. membership. Activities are usually extra. The Housing Fee is in addition to the Program Fees and may be an average for universities with multiple housing options. Students who select “apartment living arranged upon arrival” will only be charged the Program Fees, and housing costs will be paid on arrival by the student.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level.

Required GPA: 2.50

Study-Internship Program

Eligible students can undertake a part-time internship placement to complement their study abroad program at Macquarie University and enhance their resumes with international work experience. The internship will be a formal part of students’ Macquarie studies and they will receive academic credit. Students will intern for between 10-20 hours per week for 12 weeks and will be assessed by visits, interviews, reports, and a major assignment. Internship placements can be arranged in a variety of disciplines including business administration, marketing, biomedical sciences, computer science, media, communications, finance, psychology, and public relations (others not mentioned will be considered). Please note that a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to apply.

University Specific Scholarships

Gina Rosko Memorial Scholarship in Cooperation with Macquarie University (Tuition & housing for one semester, one award per year) In memory of Ms. Gina Rosko, a study abroad student in 2000, and in cooperation with Macquarie University and the Rosko family, this award is open to students studying at Macquarie University during the July semester majoring in mass communications, journalism, or advertising with at least a 3.5 GPA. Student must have substantial financial need with documented involvement in their university and community.

BIO:
Bri is a coordinator for AustraLearn's study abroad programs. She is the coordinator for Australia National University, Macquarie University, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, and University of Technology-Sydney, all in Australia.

Bri received her BA in History and Politics from Regis University in Denver, and a minor in Leadership Studies. She studied abroad in London, England, and during her time abroad, she was able to see Scotland, Sweden, France, and Belgum. Bri is also an AustraLearn alum from the short course Leadership program in New Zealand
