University of Tasmania - Degree Programs

Overview

The University of Tasmania offers international students a stimulating and rewarding combination of study and lifestyle. Founded in 1890, the University of Tasmania is one of the four original ‘sandstone’ universities of Australia and has a century-long tradition of excellence. A record of academic achievement and scholarly leadership, combined with the advantages of being the only university in the island state of Tasmania, leave it well placed to carry forward established traditions of excellence into the twenty-first century. The University is ranked in the top ten Universities in Australia for research (based on ARC research grants) and receives consistently high rankings for positive graduate outcomes, research grants and research intensively (source - The good Universities Guide).

As a medium sized institution, the University of Tasmania offers associate degree, bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs. Comprehensive student support services, small personalized classes, and low accommodation costs single the University of Tasmania out for special attention.

The University offers a pleasant, enjoyable natural environment for study. The University has two campuses for international students to choose from - one in Hobart and the other in Launceston. Both campuses are set in beautiful landscaped grounds a few kilometers from the city center, and most students are able to live within walking distance of their campus. The travel time between the two campuses is two and a half hours and each campus has its own distinct characteristics.

The University’s Hobart campus is set on 100 hectares of land in the suburb of Sandy Bay – a short distance from the city center (approx. 5-10 minutes by bus or 25-30 minutes walk). Much of the upper campus is situated in natural bushland. Closer to the city center are the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, the Clinical School, and the Tasmanian School of Art, which is housed in a renovated jam factory overlooking the harbor and takes full advantage of its historic location and spectacular setting.

The Launceston campus is situated on 50 hectares of land at Newnham, ten minutes drive from the city centre and overlooking the Tamar River. Closer to the city center, and located in restored historic railway buildings in the arts precinct of the city, are the School of Visual and Performing Arts, and the School of Architecture.
